We arrived in Florence via our friend's wonderful little car at dusk, put our luggage in our simple hotel room, and headed out to see the city. I remember walking along the cobble stone streets, chatting with our friends as everything was normal, as if I had lived in the city for a hundred years, not really paying attention to the unfamiliar around me.
That is until we arrived at the Florence Catherdal. My husband continued talking with our friends, who had lived in Italy for what seemed to them to be a hundred years, but not me, I was speakless. Enamored more like it by the overbearing structure at my side. For about 6 seconds I remember feeling as if I personally had a made a great discovery that no one in the rest of the world had taken the time to notice. I felt like shouting out, "Do you see that? O my goodness, this is fantastic", but before I could get the words out, our friends, including my husband who had seen it before, said "this has to be the most wonderful, terribly gaudy catherdal I have ever seen". At that point I knew my discovery was not special. That in fact, it was a place that had been marveled at by many and so centuries on end, and rightfully so. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
Here's to making my own personal discoveries no matter how short they are!
