Yesterday was our big day at the pediatrician for the 15-month check up. Soren got his MMR vaccine (I decided to delay his additional DTAP until 18 months) and then the doc thought it would be best to go ahead and do a finger stick to test his iron level since he did not have it done at 12 months. I think he thought I need some assurance about his iron levels as well. He ran the test and came back and told us that his iron levels were indeed low and he asked us if there was any family history. I explained that my hubby has thalassemia (a form of anemia that sometimes occurs in individuals of Mediterranean descent) so he decided to order a blood panel and run a test called hemoglobin electrophoresis to see if Soren has the same thing or if his levels are just low.
Today we made our first (and hopefully last) trek to Nationwide Children's Hospital Close to Home clinic to get the blood test. I dreaded this venture all day. I ABSOLUTELY hate the idea of someone sticking my little pumpkin. I have learned to deal with shots, but blood draws are different. We are currently waiting for the results and hoping that they got enough blood (his vein collapsed towards the end which is common for little bits). Maybe we will get the results tomorrow. Saying prayers that it is something with an easy fix.
In the meantime Soren will be having some soy ice cream tonight to celebrate his bravery! Go Butters!
