There Is a First Time for Everything

Yesterday the sick bug invaded my child. Soren woke up with a hoarse voice and cough and a low grade fever - not the sound or sight you want to hear or see first thing in the morning. Soren and Daddy camped out at home all day in hopes that this monstery bug would make its exit, but no such luck.

After his nap, Soren enjoyed about 45 minutes of play time before starting to feel really crappy. I made him a breakfast dinner (one of his favorites), but by the time I got it to the table he only took one bit and tried to curl up on the kitchen chair because he was so tired. I moved him to the couch and got him all snuggled in with this pillow and another blanket - he was so cold. I finished dinner and then sat next to him and watched Thomas the Train. I thought he was starting to go asleep as he moved his head away from the television, but that was not it. I looked him and saw what appeared as if he was choking on his tongue (is that even possible?) and quickly sat him then...puke everywhere. Boy little guy, he was so upset. I gently, but quickly took off his shirt and took him upstairs for a bath. He had a fever and was so cold in the bath even though the water was warm. I think this was his fastest bath ever!

After his bath and jammies, we settled down again on the floor this time with a BIG blanket and watched more Thomas the Train. My little bug looked so pathetic. He was so tired and felt so yucky. Any one that reads this might think "why didn't you just put him to bed?", but I wanted to make sure he wasn't going to puke again, at least not anytime soon - afterall, I thought he was choking which is an awful sight for a parent, or anyone for that matter.

At last I got him snug in his bed and he drifted off to sleep. I camped out in his doorway with the bathroom light on and read a magazine as I listened to his every sound. He did wake up an hour later and realized that he "forgot" to get a kiss and hug and say his prayers (such a creature of habit) and then he was asleep again in no time. I thought for sure it would an all-nighter (and so didn't my mom), but Soren only got up once.

In the morning, Daddy and I didn't waste any time and got an appointment with the doctor. We weren't too worried about the puking, but rather his breathing and cough. He just wasn't himself and his breathing didn't sound or look right. After a speedy trip to the doctor, we left with a classic croup diagnosis and a steroid drink to open his airway. Soren got a day with Mommy and Mommy got a day off with her little love. Daddy got a day to work on the house.

We laid low for most of the day and pretty much just watched cartoons and played with beans and bowls and spoons. It was a nice day considering. Soren is now in bed, and I am relaxing and hoping for an uneventful night.
